Quick Business Moves for New Artists!

If you're an independent artist and just getting started, this is more or less the creative process:

1. Create an instrumental (either purchased or produce on your own)

2. Write and record lyrics

3. Create a visual (preferably a music video, but cover image is fine)

4. Share and promote

That is a simplified list of one project. As an artist, you are a business. If you are going to take your music seriously you need to make sure you do the following IN ADDITION to the above process:

1. Copyright (copyright.gov/)

2. Distribution (distrokid.com/)

3. Artist/Songwriting Royalty claims (bmi.com/)

4. Publishing and other Royalties, both in your country and international (songtrust.com/) & (soundexchange.com/)

5. Create an LLC under your artist name

6. Open a seperate bank account under that LLC

*The above steps are companies which handle each of these processes. There are many other companies that can do so as well. These are ones which I use personally and recommend, however do your research and see which best fits YOU.
